Is it compulsory for file tax returns when I do not have any income or have not traded?
Anyone with an active KRA Pin Number ought to file the returns as per the specific active obligations. In an instance where a taxpayer has no income or transactions relating to a given obligation & period, they are mandated to file NIL returns. Failure to file NIL returns attracts penalties as per the respective obligations
How can I apply for a VAT obligation?
Registration of VAT is initiated through an amendment on the taxpayer’s account. Thereafter, the taxpayer submits the necessary documentation to their tax station for review after which the KRA representatives approve the VAT obligations

All KRA taxes are payable through mobile money such as M-pesa or Airtel Money, any partner banks. A taxpayer generates a payment slip from iTax which they use in payment through their preferred method
What do I do if I have a suspended VAT obligation?
Suspension of a VAT obligation often occurs due to non-compliance or an assumption of non-compliance. In an event where a VAT obligation is suspended, the burden of proof lies on the taxpayer to proof to KRA that contrary to their claims they are compliant. The taxpayer ought to engage their tax service office to facilitate re-activation of the VAT obligation

How can I register a company in Kenya?
Registration of companies in Kenya is done by the Registrar of Companies through the E-CITIZEN platform. A submission of information & documentation including the preferred names of the company is made through the E-CITIZEN platform after which a review is made and if approved the owners are issued with a certificate of incorporation & CR 12.
Can a foreigner own a company in Kenya?
Yes, a foreigner can own a company in Kenya. There are no restrictions denying foreign nationals from owning a company in Kenya. Foreigners who want to own and run a business in Kenya are required to acquire a permit from the Immigration Department. Foreigners can own the companies at 100% shareholding or even partner with citizens in any business of their choosi
How long does it take to register a Company in Kenya?
Registration of a company in Kenya often takes a maximum of 14 working days. All documentation & information is submitted through the E-CITIZEN platform after which the owners are issued with a Name Reservation Certificate indicating their reserved name from their name suggestions. Soon afterwards, after review of the submissions the owners are issued with a Certificate of Incorporation & a CR 12 of the fully registered company.
What are the necessary requirements to register a company in Kenya?

Is it possible to add or remove a director from a company?
Yes, you can either add or remove a director from a company through a share transfer or resignation process. When removing a director from a company, the outgoing director shareholder resigns from the company and transfers their shares to the existing directors. When adding a new director shareholder to a company is allocated shares from the existing director as per the preferred shareholding.
Does a foreigner require a work permit to do business in Kenya
A work permit is issued to foreign nationals who already have a job opportunity in Kenya. It is not a permit to do business but to undertake specific employment from a legal entity in Kenya.
How can I close, dissolve, or de-register a company in Kenya?
Formal dissolution of companies is made through the Registrar of Companies. A company submits a formal requistion with the Registrar of Companies accompanied by attachments of a special resolution passed by the directors and attaching a copy of the certificate of incorporation. The company lodges the application through lodging Form CR 18 and Form CR 19 and paying the requisite application fees.
What are the categories of businesses that you can register in Kenya?
Sole proprietorship: The business is owned by one person, whereby the business and the owner as exist as the same person
Partnership: This is business name owned by more than one person under any form of agreement by the partners
Private limited company: The is business where company and its directors exist as separate entities and the directors
Public limited company: This is a business entity that allows the general public to won & transfer shares freely and at their discretion without any form of limitation.
How can I register a society in Kenya?
Registration of societies in Kenya is by the Registrar of Societies through the Societies Act. Under the Societies Act, the registration can entail the registration of political parties, churches, welfare associations, sports associations, & private member clubs.
